Fascinated by the history of the Mennonites, Hannes Schmid visited a settlement near Belize City in June 1995. Members of the church tend to be withdrawn, with a firm belief in the virtue of a simple existence, and it took a great deal of tactful and sensitive discussion before Schmid gained their confidence sufficiently to begin documenting their lives. Time – as we understand it – stood still while Schmid was in Shipyard: it is a community that has no need of unnecessary material possessions: kind, simple and reserved.
